Day Seven










Today marked our last full day in Liberia. We split up into two groups with one going to Abundant Life Christian School and one going to One Body One Hope’s main campus. 

A lot of the guys that went to Abundant Life earlier in the week wanted to go back so they could see the kids they started to get to know. Since it was Saturday, school wasn’t in session, so the only kids there were the orphans who live at Abundant Life full time. It was a joy to see the smiles on the kids faces as their new American friends came back to see them before they left. Once again, we played a lot of kickball, lapa, and soccer. We also taught them how to play “defender ball.” Defender ball is essentially a kid friendly version of football. We’re not sure if American football will catch on Liberia, but we sure have tried our best. 

The rest of the team who went to the main campus continued working on the church project. We kept working hard mixing sand, concrete mix, and rock together to pour more foundation for the addition. Nick Wellen brought a JBL speaker along, so we had a blast showing the people working with us some of the music we like to listen to during practice. The song “International Harvester” was a big hit amongst the Liberians. We even got to play “Enter Sandman” for them and show them how we enter the stadium on game days to that song. It was pretty special. The last song we showed them was jump around. Anyone who knows Dordt football knows what we do when this song comes on. It was a blast to ‘jump around’ together with our Liberian brothers and sisters in our sweaty clothes in the church. We even had a dance off. Much like soccer and lapa, we didn’t fair too well in the dance competition…

For our final debrief on the beach we broke out into small groups. Our discussion was focused around the application of what we’ve learned this week. Coach Penner challenged us to answer the question, “what commitment will you make to yourself based on this trip that will be true 2 years from now?” This helped us think through how we will apply all the amazing experiences we’ve had this week to our lives back in Sioux Center. It’s important to us that we don’t leave here unchanged. That the moves of the Holy Spirit which we have felt so strongly here will travel with us back to our side of the Atlantic. 

We are excited to wrap up our trip tomorrow at church. We will worship from 8:30am to 1pm, then come back to get packed up and leave for the airport. Our flight from Liberia to Brussels leaves at 10pm local time. Our team has been challenged to share a song during church tomorrow. We’re going to sing “In Christ Alone.” We practiced tonight on the beach. It isn’t the most harmonious thing you’ve ever heard, but you’d better believe we’re going to sing with everything we’ve got! We’ll be sure to provide you with an update on how that goes for us in tomorrow’s blog. 

Please pray for our guys to healthy tonight from any sickness as we gear up for a long journey home.

Day Five

Today we were back at it here in Liberia traveling many miles to continue our pursuit of relationships, learning, and growing closer to Christ. Two of the three groups went to schools that were outside of Monrovia. It took over an hour and a half to get there by van. Getting outside the city, we were able to see more of rural Liberia. The children and teachers at these schools get less contact from trips like ours, so it was a blessing to be able to spend time with them, bring gifts, and experience community together. Here is a run down of what all three groups did:  Group One went to a Christian school in Totota. This was the longest trip we’ve taken yet. It was a 2.5 hour van ride. We cram as many people in the vans as possible to ensure we maximize our efficiency when traveling. Day Four

 Today we took a slight step back from our frenzied pace of the first 2 days in country. All three groups got back to our place around 2-3pm and we enjoyed the ocean together. We had guys playing in the water and learning how to surf in the African waves. It was pretty awesome. Before we had fun, we made sure to get a good day of work in. Here’s what the three groups did today: Group 1 was the last of the team to head out to the farm. They took the tour and learned the processes of palm oil production. Now everyone on our team has been out to the farm. The group today also helped with some harvesting of the palm as we completed the dirt project on the first 2 days. Dordt football was able to help create a more level surface for traffic to and from the storage shed. Praise God!   Group 2 went to another school called Harbel.
